EVANSTON, Ill. - The 14th-ranked Northwestern University women's tennis team defeated 33rd-ranked Indiana, 5-2, Saturday at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. The win improved the Wildcats to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are now 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten.
Northwestern opened the match by gaining the doubles point for an early advantage. NU clinched close matches at the Nos. 2 and 4 to win the match. Shannon Duffy pulled out a third-set tiebreaker and Lia Jackson pulled out a tough three-setter to seal the Wildcat victory, defeating IU's Jessica Levin, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The win improved Jackson's dual match record to 15-0 this season.
The 'Cats got straight-set wins at the Nos. 3 and 6 to help lead NU to its third Big Ten win of the season. Colleen Cheng bested IU's Jessica Levin, 6-2, 6-2 for the first singles win of the day. Lutgert followed, defeating Ann Poosthasee, 6-4, 6-0. Indiana's only points came at Nos. 1 and 5, where Jessica Anderson defeated Katherine Nasser in a hard-fought match at No. 1 and Rebecca Wallihan defeated Marine Piriou.
Northwestern will be back in action on Sunday, March 26, when they play host to the Boilermakers of Purdue at 11 a.m. The match is scheduled to be played at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
