Northwestern Names Athletes of the Week for May 22

Northwestern University has named its Athletes of the Week for May 22. The selections were based on results from May 15-21.

MALE -- Luke Donald, Golf
Top-ranked Luke Donald (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England/Royal Grammar School) finished the 2000 NCAA Central Regional in a tie for third place as all three of his rounds were under par (69-69-70). His five-under-par performance led the Wildcats to their fourth straight NCAA Championships appearance, and was good enough for fifth place on the school's all-time 54-hole tournament record list. Donald has finished in the top five in nine of 12 tournaments this year, including four wins.

FEMALE -- Lauren Schwendimann, Softball
Freshman Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) pitched 27.2 of Northwestern's 30 innings at the NCAA regional in Norman, Okla. over the weekend, where the Wildcats finished third. Schwendimann was the hard-luck loser in Game 1, allowing Oregon State only one run in nine innings. After earning the win in relief against Harvard, Schwendimann scattered nine hits and struck out nine in shutting out Arkansas. A second team All-Big Ten and All-Mideast Region selection, Schwendimann finished the season 20-11 with a 1.76 ERA and 223 strikeouts in 210.2 innings pitched.
