EVANSTON, Ill. - On the strength of three more individual championships -- giving them five for the weekend -- the Northwestern women's swimming and diving team finished third at the Big Ten championships for the second year in a row. The Wildcats scored 459 points to finish behind defending champion Minnesota (562.50) and Michigan (501).
Junior Tashy Bohm got the title run started for the Wildcats, placing first in the 200-yard backstroke in an NCAA `A' standard time of 1:58.19. Freshman Susannah Sample was right behind Bohm, placing second in 1:58.86 which was an NCAA `B' standard.
Senior Amy Balcerzak earned her second title of the weekend, achieving an NCAA `A' standard in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.40 to win by nearly three seconds. Balcerzak finished the meet with two individual titles, a second-place finish in the 200 IM, and was a member of NU's winning 200 medley relay team.
Sophomore Merritt Adams was a surprise winner in the 200-yard butterfly, nudging Wisconsin's Gina Panighetti by .19 seconds in 2:00.16. Rachel Johnson was sixth in that event in 2:01.93. Both Wildcats achieved an NCAA `B' standard.
Courtney Allen placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA `B' standard time of 49.72 seconds, and Northwestern's 400 freestyle relay team placed second in 3:20.80 (an NCAA `B' standard).
