ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - Northwestern put up its lowest scoring tally in 58 years as Evansville defeated the Wildcats 48-26 Friday in the first round of the Hoop & Quill Classic.

Not since a 38-20 loss to Purdue in the 1940-41 season had the Wildcats (1-1) scored fewer points.

Evansville (3-0) led 25-8 at halftime, and Northwestern didn't even reach double figures until guard Ben Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 14 minutes left. Johnson led all Wildcats scorers with nine points.

Sophomore guard Clint Keown led Evansville with 14 points, and Adam Seitz had 12.

The largest lead for Evansville was 25, which it held three times in the second half.

Northwestern shot 18 percent from the field in the first half and 21 percent for the game. The Wildcats connected on two of their 20 3-point attempts.

The Purple Aces shot only 26 percent for the game but turned the ball over only twice.

Evansville will play the winner of the Nebraska/Southern Mississippi game Saturday in the semifinals of the tournament.

The tournament is the inaugural collegiate event at The Family Arena. The 10,000-seat facility is located 30 miles from downtown St. Louis.
