EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team fell to Indiana, 2-0, in the semifinal round of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
The loss ended the Wildcats' season at 6-14. The Hoosiers, ranked third in the NSCAA national poll this week, will play Penn State in Sunday's Big Ten final, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the 41st minute when Yuri Lavrinenko blasted a free kick into the upper right hand corner of the goal, beyond the outstretched hands of NU keeper Matt Keeler. It was the first goal allowed by the Wildcats in 355 minutes, dating back to the regular season against Denver.
Indiana held play through much of the contest, and was rewarded again with just one second left in the match when Aleksey Korol took a through-pass from Matt Fundenberger and potted his 14th goal of the season.
IU outshot the 'Cats, 14-3, and held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Keeler was forced to make four saves for Northwestern, while T.J. Hannig had just one in the Hoosier goal in garnering IU's 11th shutout of the season and second against the Wildcats this year.
