EVANSTON Ill. - Shooting an even-par 71, Northwestern junior Luke Donald captured his second collegiate title in as many events this year at the Windon Memorial hosted by the Wildcats. The victory was Donald?s seventh win in the last 11 collegiate tournaments he has played.
Donald, the defending NCAA champion, finished five strokes ahead of Kent's Ben Curtis and 1998 NCAA champion James McLean of Minnesota. Donald was the only player to break par as he carded a 4-under, 54-hole total of 209. Donald?s second round score of 67 was the low round for the tournament.
As a team, Northwestern made a huge surge in the standings on the final day, moving up six spots to finish in second place. NU shot a 291, the low round by six strokes. Kent won the Windon with a four-day total of 877, four shots better than the ?Cats. Stanford, which led after Monday's first two rounds, finished in third place, one stroke behind Northwestern.
Northwestern got a strong push from senior Jess Daley, who was the only individual to break par on Tuesday with a 68 for a three-round total of 223. Daley and Donald were the only two golfers to finish at par or below in the final round. Daley?s 68 allowed him to tie for 17th overall with fellow 'Cat Josh Habig (73-73-77=223).
