EVANSTON, Ill. - With Jess Daley shooting a final-round 66 to finish second individually, the top-ranked Northwestern men's golf team ended up third at The Nelson, hosted this weekend by Stanford.
The host Cardinal surged back with a final-round 281 to score a three-day total of 847 as a team to record a one-stroke victory over Fresno State. The Wildcats were third at 853, while Washington was fourth at 854.
Martin Maritz of Tulsa led wire-to-wire through the weekend, carding a 67-68-68=203 over the three days to defeat Daley by a stroke. Todd Rose of Fresno State was third overall at 209, five strokes off of Daley's pace.
Luke Donald, the defending NCAA champion for the Wildcats, carded a 73 and finished in a four-way tie for 13th place with a three-round total of 212 (-1). Scott Harrington finished in a tie for 27th with a 216.
Daniel Riskam finished 52nd with a three-round total of 221 (+8), while Josh Habig was tied for 80th with a three-round total of 225 (+12).
The Nelson is the final fall event for the men's golf team.
