NU-IU Women's Swim Meet Saturday Will Be Family Affair

Oct. 28, 1999

EVANSTON, Ill. - When the Northwestern University and Indiana University women?s swimming and diving teams meet this Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Wildcats? Norris Aquatics Center, more than just Big Ten bragging rights will be on the line.

Try bragging rights over next month?s Thanksgiving dinner table. Adding spice to an otherwise ordinary dual-meet season opener, sixth-year Northwestern head coach Jimmy Tierney will be matching wits against his sister, Dorsey, who is in her second year as head coach of the IU program.

?I?m excited for her to bring her team up here,? said Jimmy, who is fourth among eight Tierney children while Dorsey is the youngest. ?It will be fun to see her and her team, and what they have done to improve. It will be a great day, both from a personal and a professional standpoint.?

None of the other siblings will be able to add to the Tierney reunion, said Jimmy ? ?most of them live too far away.?

This will be the first time the two have faced off against each other in a dual meet situation. Last year, in Dorsey?s first year at Indiana, the Wildcats finished third at the Big Ten championships while the Hoosiers placed fifth.

Indiana is sticking around Sunday, as well, and will be one of six schools to compete in the Northwestern Relays.
