Northwestern Field Hockey Falls to No. 11 Ohio State in Overtime

Oct. 17, 1999

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team was defeated by the Ohio State Buckeyes in an overtime thriller at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Wildcats took an 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when Kristy Whitman scored on a penalty corner. Less than one minute later, though, Ohio State's Haley Fox scored the Buckeyes first goal of the game.

With 19:52 remaining in the game, OSU took the lead when Fox redirected a shot by Deanna Menichini for her second goal of the afternoon. Northwestern rebounded by scoring with just 1:11 remaining in the game when Amy Haase found an open Lindsay Wright to tie the game at 2-2 and send the contest into overtime. Haase's assist was her second of the game.

Ohio State wasted little time in the extra session, though, scoring just 1:02 into the first overtime period when Marije van Nouhuys converted a penalty corner from Diana Kuser.

Northwestern will be home twice next weekend as part of the University's "Women in Sports" celebration. On Friday, the Wildcats will play Michigan at 4 p.m., and on Sunday they meet Michigan State at noon. Both games will be played on Lakeside Field.
