EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's soccer team gave fifth-ranked Penn State fits on Friday afternoon, but fell just short in a valiant effort, 1-0, in front of 890 fans on Jeffrey Field at State College.
The Nittany Lions got a penalty-kick goal from Ricardo Villar in the sixth minute and made it stand up to improve to 10-1 overall (1-1 Big Ten). Northwestern fell to 1-9 overall (1-2 Big Ten).
Matt Keeler had a spectacular game for the Wildcats, making 10 saves in the goal as Penn State outshot NU, 15-3 on the day. For the Nittany Lions, Whit Gibson made one stop.
The men will be back in action Wednesday, kicking off a three-match homestand with Depaul at 4 p.m. on Lakeside Field.
