Cross Country Takes Second in Tri-Meet with Purdue and Illinois

EVANSTON, Ill. - With freshman Karen Rogers leading the way, the Northwestern women's cross country team finished second in a three-way Big Ten meet with Purdue and Illinois Friday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind.

Rogers placed third overall in a time of 17:31.9 on the 5-kilometer course, behind Purdue's Ann Stechschulte and Teresa Kamleiter. After Nicole Nigh and Barb Wenger came in behind Rogers for the Boilermakers, NU grabbed the next three spots as Jennifer Anderson (17:43.34), Mary Beth Ellis (17:51.8) and Rachel Evjen (17:53.6) finished.

Purdue closed out the win when Heather Hartshorne came in 10th, but the Wildcats' Nicole Kuznia was right behind her in 11th (18:09.9). Overall, the Boilermakers won the three-way race with a score of 22 points, while Northwestern scored 35. Illinois was far behind both squads, with 79 points.

The Northwestern cross country team will be back in action next Friday, traveling to Tampa for the South Florida Invitational.
