Luke Donald Captures Medalist Honors at Windon Memorial

Oct. 5, 1999

EVANSTON, Ill. - Shooting an even-par 71 on a Conway Farms golf course ravaged by strong winds, Northwestern junior Luke Donald captured his second collegiate title in as many events Tuesday at the Windon Memorial hosted by the Wildcats.

Donald, the defending NCAA champion, finished five strokes ahead of Kent's Ben Curtis and 1998 NCAA champion James McLean of Minnesota. For the three rounds, Donald was the only player to break par as he carded a 4-under total of 209.

As a team, Northwestern made a huge surge in the standings Tuesday but could not capture the championship. That went to Kent, which carded a three-round total of 877 to finish 25-over-par and was good enough to beat the second-place Wildcats by four strokes. Stanford, which led after Monday's first two rounds, finished in third place a stroke behind Northwestern.

Northwestern got a strong push from senior Jess Daley, who was the only individual to break 70 on Tuesday with a 68 for a three-round total of 223. That allowed him to tie for 17th overall with fellow ?Cat Josh Habig (73-73-77=223). David Shaffer (tied for 46th, 78-76-75=229) and Scott Harrington (67th, 81-76-83=240) rounded out Northwestern's participants.
