Women's Cross Country Team Wins Again

EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore Cherisse Lancaster (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) won her second individual title in as many weeks, and the Northwestern University women?s cross country team captured its second team trophy in as many meets Saturday by taking the four-team Stan Lyons Invitational at Butler University.

The Wildcats scored 30 points, defeating fellow Big Ten member Purdue by 10 points. Butler was third with 63, while Evansville was a distant fourth with 189 points.

Lancaster covered the 5-kilometer course in 17:04.07, easily besting teammate Mary Beth Ellis (Lewes, Del./Lawrenceville) who finished second.

Jennifer Anderson (Rockford, Ill./Auburn Academy) and Karen Rogers (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) also placed in the Top 10, recording times of 18:15.78 and 18:21.25, respectively. Shannon McGowan (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) was the other ?Cat to score, coming in 13th in 18:35.44.

The Wildcats are off until Sept. 25, when they will compete in the Pre-National meet being held in Bloomington, Ind. That race will be run on the course that will later be used for the NCAA national championship meet in November.
