EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer team scored two goals in a 15-minute span late in the second half and held on to defeat SMU, 2-1 in Evanston this afternoon during the first day of NU's Wildcat Classic.
After a first half that saw two Northwestern shots find the woodwork, sophomore Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) got the Wildcats on the board in the 71st minute, heading home a corner kick from senior Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) for her second goal of the season.
The 'Cats added an important insurance goal later, as Brooke Bell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) took a feed from Janelle Harwood (Brighton, Mich./Brighton), broke in alone and beat Mustang goalkeeper Becca Leif from five yards out.
The goal would prove to be important, as SMU roared back and scored on a blast from Lana Darnell in the 87th minute. A delay of game call gave SMU another outstanding chance in the final minute, but the Mustangs were unable to convert.
The first match of the day saw Illinois defeat Boston University, 3-0.
The Wildcats will meet Boston University to close out the Wildcat Classic on Sunday at noon on Lakeside Field.
