Sept. 1, 1999
A hardy laugh.
A contagious smile.
A million miles of love & life.
The family of Matthew C. Hartl deeply regrets the passing of their son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin.
As most of you know by now, Matthew passed away Monday evening, August 30 at 10:15 p.m. from complications stemming from a four-year battle with Hodgkins Disease. This is the same disease that his mother, Eleanor, succumbed to two years earlier. Matt was being treated at the Evanston Northwestern Hospital at the time of his passing.
Matthew was born in Landstudl, Germany on March 12, 1976 to William and Eleanor Hartl. Matt was raised in Sturgeon Bay, WI, Washington, D.C., and Denver, CO. He attended George Washington High School in Denver, CO and excelled both academically and athletically. He was an all-state athlete in both baseball and football his junior and senior years.
After graduation with honors from high school in the spring of 1994, Matt signed a letter of intent to play football for Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. He was redshirted his freshman year at NU, but in his sophomore year, he helped lead the Wildcats to the 1996 Rose Bowl against the University of Southern California.
Matt?s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the friends Matt made in Evanston and at Northwestern University, the doctors and nurses of Evanston Northwestern Hospital and the Kellogg Cancer Center as well as all who made Matt part of the Northwestern University family and supported him throughout his illness.
