Aug. 26, 1999

EVANSTON, Ill. ? The 1999 Northwestern University football team returned from ?Camp Kenosha? Wednesday night, after spending the last 12 days in two-a-days on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The highlight of the camp came last Saturday, August 21, when the team held its intrasquad scrimmage. Junior Nick Kreinbrink, who is likely to start at quarterback for the Wildcats when they step on the field against Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 4, completed 10-of-14 passes for 150 yards including a 65-yard touchdown strike to sophomore deep threat Sam Simmons. Junior Zak Kustok, a QB transfer from Notre Dame, was 4-of-8 passing for 63 yards, while sophomore Bob Barz was 5-of-12 for 39 yards. Aaron Burrell led the receivers, catching four passes for 61 yards, while Simmons added an eight-yard grab to go along with his TD. Three other players ? John Cerasani, Rob Johnson and Ronnie Foster ? added a pair of receptions. The running game looked sharp as well. Junior Damien Anderson, last year?s leading rusher, picked up where he left off by running for 45 yards in seven attempts. The top ground-gainer on the day was freshman Chris Brown, who ran the ball 11 times for 51 yards. Junior Brian Marshall added 28 yards on nine carries while freshman Louis Ayeni had 27 on 10 carries. Northwestern begins practice today in Evanston in preparation for the Sept. 4 season opener against Miami of Ohio, a game that will pit new NU head coach Randy Walker against his former team in the Red Hawks. This Saturday, August 28, the Wildcats will hold a scrimmage on Ryan Field that is closed to the media and the public.
