Balcerzak, Allen Win Medals at World University Games

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's swimmers Amy Balcerzak and Courtney Allen have eached earned a medal during the first three days of competition at the World University Games in Mallorca, Spain.

Balcerzak, who was a three-time All-American last season, placed third in the 200 meter breaststroke to win a bronze medal with a time of 2:32.50. Her preliminary time of 2:32.10 was the 24th-fastest American time in that event in USA swimming history.

Allen, a five-time All-American in 1998-99, anchored the gold-medal winning women's 400 meter freestyle relay with a split time of 55.58. The U.S. held a .07 second lead going into Allen's leg and ended up with a winning time of 3:47.98 almost two seconds ahead of second place Italy (3:49.32).
