Northwestern 6, Michigan 1
Northwestern won the Big Ten regular season crown with a 6-1 victory over Michigan this afternoon. The Wildcats (15-4, 9-1 Big Ten) secured the No. 1 seed at next weekend's Big Ten Women's Tennis Championships in East Lansing, Mich.. They enter the tournament having won nine of their last 10 dual matches and eight-straight.
The 'Cats almost achieved perfection against the Wolverines, but Michigan's Danielle Lund won a stubborn three-set thriller over Shannon Duffy (Plano, Texas) at No. 2 singles. Lund spoiled Duffy's undefeated mark in Big Ten competition and handed the sophomore her first Big Ten singles loss since Feb. 15, 1998. Duffy finished the conference regular season with a 9-1 singles record and 10-0 mark at No. 3 doubles.
Several individual streaks were kept alive today. Junior Jennifer Lutgert (Evergreen, Colo.) posted her 10th consecutive singles win at the No. 6 position. She now owns a career and team-best 27-5 singles record this season. Sophomore Colleen Cheng (Hillsborough, Calif.) won her eighth-straight dual match at No. 4 singles and improved to 23-9 on the year.
Senior Laura Guignon (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Katherine Nasser (Arlington Heights, Ill.), the 17th-ranked doubles team in the nation, won their eighth consecutive match together. They improved to 17-5 and have now won 12 of their last 13 matches.
