Women's Golf Takes Eighth Place at Big Ten-Big 12 Shootout

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 17th-ranked Northwestern women's golf team took eighth place at the Big Ten-Big 12 Shootout, which concluded Tuesday at the Legends Golf Course in Franklin, Ind. The Wildcats posted rounds of 297-314-317 to finish with a team total of 928. Tenth-ranked Texas won the tournament at 891. Eight of the 15 teams in the tournament were ranked in the latest Golfweek magazine poll.

Leading the way for NU was sophomore Christie Hermes (Dixon, Ill./ Newman Central), who tied for 20th place with a score of 14-over-par 230. Her score of 71 in the opening round of the tournament tied the Northwestern single-round record set in 1997 by Rebecca Halpern and last year by Colleen Kiely. Indiana's Erin Carney won the individual title with a two-under-par 214.

Other Wildcat finishers were: Karen England (t24th, 76-76-79=231), Emily Gilley (t38th, 74-79-81=234), Colleen Kiely (t38th, 77-78-79=234) and Kristen Beystehner (t63rd, 76-86-81=243).

At the tournament, every Wildcat player tied or bettered their low round of the season. NU as a team averaged 309 strokes per round, an improvement of 13 strokes off their average heading into "The Shootout." The Wildcats conclude the fall season on Oct. 23-24, when NU takes part in the Notre Dame Invitational in Bonita Springs, Fla.
