NU Swimmers Score Double Victory vs. Wisconsin

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned their first double victory of the 1998-99 season with wins against Wisconsin at Norris Aquatics Center. The women's team raised its overall and Big Ten mark to 2-1 with a 124-119 victory, and the men are now 2-1 (1-1 Big Ten) after winning 140.5-100.5.

Northwestern's men tallied nine individual wins, and the NU women had six. Sophomore Todd Capen (mens 200-yard individual medley, 200 butterfly), junior Steve Harms (mens 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and junior Courtney Allen (women's 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) each had two individual wins.

Wisconsin earned four wins on the men's side and seven on the women's side. Wisconsin sophomore Ellen Stonebreaker set a Norris Aquatics Center pool record in the women's 200 freestyle with a time of 9:57.51.

Many more pool records figure to fall at this weekend's Swim Meet of Champions, during which the top two swimmers in every event from the the Big Ten Conference will swim against members of the USA National Team. The two-day event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 and 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.

This will be the first time since the Olympics Swimming Trials were held in Chicago in 1972 that there has been such a tremendous collection of world-ranked swimmers competing in Illinois. The USA National Team will feature such superstars as:

  • Christina Teuscher -- Olympic Gold medalist
  • Dr. Ron Karnaugh -- American record holder
  • Natalie Coughlin -- National champion
  • Bill Pilczuk -- World champion
