Men's Swimming finishes 28th at NCAA Meet

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Competing with just two swimmers, Northwestern's men's swimming team scored 16 points to finish in 28th place at the 1999 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Auburn came in first place in the three-day meet, which wrapped up today. This is Northwestern's best national finish since 1973, when NU took 22nd place.

In the final day of competition, NU senior Brian Walters (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter) shattered his personal best and the Northwestern school record by swimming a 1:42.70 in the preliminary round of the 200-yard backstroke competition. In the finals, he swam a 1:42.80 to take fourth place overall. Walters' finish was the best by a Wildcat individual since 1966.

Sophomore Steve Steketee (Golden, Colo./Golden) swam a 44.52 in the 100-freestyle to take 29th place. Following are NU's complete results for the events:
