EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team dropped to 2-3 (1-3 Big Ten) by losing 140-101 at Purdue this evening. It marked NU's second straight Big Ten road loss in January.
The Wildcats did come away with individual victories in four straight events. Freshman Elliot Massuda (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) won the three-meter diving competition with a 270.22 score, which outdistanced his nearest competitor's score by more than 33 points. Sophomore Jason Merchant (Pearl City, Hawaii/Punahou) won in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.52), sophomore Steve Steketee (Golden, Colo./Golden) in the 100-yard freestyle (46.59) and senior Brian Walters (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter) set a team-personal best time for the season with a 1:47.50 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Northwestern's final home meet of the year will be Friday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. vs. Northern Illinois. The Wildcats finish up their 1998-99 dual meet schedule at Iowa Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m.
