Men's Swim Team Completes Day Two of Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team is in eighth place out of 10 teams after completing the second of three days of competition at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind. NU finished the day with 180.5 points, 2.5 points behind Ohio State and 3.5 points behind Purdue. Penn State is in first place with 404 points.

Sophomore Todd Capen (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) completed the day's most remarkable swim for the Wildcats, swimming a 3:52.99 in the 400-yard individual medley. He finished third and broke the Northwestern school record by nearly six seconds. Sophomore Steve Steketee (Golden, Colo./Golden) took second place in the 200 freestyle, missing first by only 0.12 seconds.

After breaking the Northwestern record in the 100 backstroke by swimming a 47.94 relay leg yesterday, senior Brian Walters (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter) came back today to swim a 47.93 in individual 100 back competition. The time was good for second place and another school record. In the 800 freestyle relay, NU took third place with a 6:33.31, setting a third school record.
