Summary: Ohio State midfielder Brian Feldhaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) banked a goal off the post at the 67:19 mark as the third-seeded Buckeyes held off a scrappy sixth-seeded Northwestern team, 2-1, in the opening game of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament. OSU advances to face Penn State in Saturday's semifinals.
"We did a fairly good job pressing the ball up field and pushing the speed of the game," said Ohio State head coach John Bluem. "Northwestern, though, has improved significantly this season. We now have to turn around in less than 24 hours and be ready to play again."
OSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead as John Monebrake was the beneficiary of two excellent crossing passes, bouncing the ball in from the right hand corner of the box for the early lead. The Wildcats brought their home crowd to life early in the second period as midfielder Brandon Swalve (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) knocked in a header to knot the contest at 1-1. OSU answered with the game-winner just seven minutes later on Feldhaus bank shot off the post.
"I think we were very competitive today," said Northwestern head coach Michael Kunert. "We wanted to establish our own game. The breaks just went their way. Overall, though, I was very pleased with our effort."
