EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern men's golf team fired a one-under par 287 and stands in 13th place following the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Freshman Luke Donald posted a 2-under par 70 and senior Matt Seppanen carded a one-under 71 to lead the 'Cats. Donald is currently three shots out of first while Seppanen is four shots back of the leaders (Voska, Miami; Armour, Ohio State; Henry, TCU).
Junior Erik Ciotti played the par 72 New Mexico Championship Golf Course even, while junior Josh Habig finished with a two-over 74 and sophomore Jess Daley had a 75. Seppanen's 71 marked the fourth-straight round he has shot under par in tournament action.
Oklahoma State leads the field at 10 under, followed closely by Georgia (-9) and Georgia Tech (-7). Florida is in fourth at six-under and Clemson is in fifth at -5. Places six through 21 are seperated by only seven shots.
Following Thursday's second round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams (no ties) and the top nine individuals not on those teams. NU, which was one of only 13 teams to score under par on Wednesday, tees off at 1:00 p.m. C.T. on Thursday.
