Luke Donald Reclaims No. 1 Collegiate Golf Ranking

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore mens golfer Luke Donald (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England) has reclaimed his spot as this years top-ranked mens collegiate golfer. He now stands No. 1 nationally in the Golfstat Cup rankings and No. 2 according to this mornings Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

Donald currently holds a stroke average of 70.00, with Stanfords Joel Kribel ranked second by Golfstat at 70.35. Texas David Gossett, who is No. 1 in Golfweek, ranks third by Golfstat with a 70.55 stroke average. Donalds average of 70.00 would be the lowest since the inception of the Golfstat Cup in 1996, which is awarded to the collegiate golfer with the lowest stroke average for the year. Tiger Woods holds the record for lowest average, shooting 70.61 in the 1995-96 season. NU senior Josh Habig also ranks among the top 100 collegiate golfers in the country, standing 83rd in the latest Mastercard rankings, released by the Collegiate Golf Foundation.

The Wildcats, ranked 12th in the country by Golfweek, head to Huntington, W. Va., this weekend for the Marshall Invitational, scheduled for Fri.-Sat., April 9-10, at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. The field for the tournament includes 20 teams: Akron, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kent, Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Murray State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio, Ohio State, Purdue, Toledo and Wisconsin.

The teams will play 36 holes on Friday with the final 18 holes scheduled for Saturday morning. NU is paired with Marshall, Ohio State and Toledo for Fridays play. Saturdays pairings are determined by team standings entering the final round. Results will posted following each days competition on Northwesterns official internet site (www.nusports.com).
