Iowa Defeats Northwestern Baseball, 3-0

EVANSTON, Ill. - Iowa senior right-hander Troy Wulf pitched a three-hit complete game shutout as the Hawkeyes (22-31, 6-19 Big Ten) defeated Northwestern (21-29, 7-18 Big Ten) on Saturday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park, 3-0.

Iowa opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Jason Edgecombe walked and later scored on a ground out by first baseman Brad Carlson. The Hawkeyes added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer by Carlson, his 18th of the season.

Wulf improves to 5-3 on the season, walking one while striking out seven batters. Northwestern freshman Gabe Ribas (4-6) took the loss, scattering nine hits and fanning six batters in a complete-game effort.

The series continues with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at 1 p.m. The teams will conclude the 1999 season with a single game on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
