Erik Ciotti Fires 72 in First Round of U.S. Open

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern senior Erik Ciotti fired an opening-round two-over-par 72 on Thursday at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. He is five shots off the lead after one round.

With six players left on the course, Ciotti was tied for 53th place in the 156-player field. Ciotti is part of group at 72 which includes Colin Montgomerie, Paul Azinger, Stewart Cink and Ernie Els.

Ciotti, along with playing partners Gary Hallberg and Esteban Toledo, are scheduled to tee off in Friday's second round at 10 a.m. EDT. The top 60 golfers, or anyone within 10 strokes of the lead after 36 holes, make the cut and advance to the final two rounds.
