Northwestern and Ohio State opened their Big Ten seasons in a game in which the Wildcats pulled within one run three times, only to see the Buckeyes score four in the sixth inning to seal a win. For NU, sophomore first baseman J.J. Standring (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, a Northwestern season high. Junior designated hitter Pat Thompson (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) hit his second home run of the year.
