Northwestern 7, Michigan State 0
Northwestern blanked Michigan State (11-10, 1-8 Big Ten) for its third 7-0 sweep over a Big Ten opponent this season. The Wildcats (14-4, 8-1 Big Ten) are one win away from capturing the regular season conference crown. They play Michigan tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
NU extended its winning streak to seven-straight matches and has won eight of its last nine duals overall.
All six singles players won in straight sets today and the Wildcats swept for the doubles point. Sophomore Shannon Duffy (Plano, Texas) still stands as the only player in the Big Ten to be undefeated in both singles and doubles. She improved to 9-0 in Big Ten play in both facets, taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles and teaming with junior Leigh Weinraub (Dix Hills, N.Y.) for an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Laura Guignon (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Katherine Nasser (Arlington Heights, Ill.), the No. 17-ranked doubles team in the country, won their seventh-straight match together with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. The duo is 16-5 overall and has won 11 of their last 12.
Junior Jennifer Lutgert (Evergreen, Colo.) posted her ninth consecutive singles win at the No. 6 position. She owns a career and team-best 26-5 singles record this season. Duffy and sophomore Colleen Cheng (Hillsborough, Calif.) are each riding seven-match winning streaks in singles competition.
